10 Facts about Strumble Head

1. Strumble Head is located within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and just a few miles west of Fishguard.
2. It is also only 50 miles from Ireland and closer to Dublin than London, or even Cardiff!
3. Also known as the Pencaer Peninsula, it isn’t really a peninsula.
4. Three tiny islands lie off the headland: Ynys Meicl (St Michael's Island), Ynys Onnen (Ash Island) and Carreg Onnen (Ash Rock).
5. Pen Caer is also well known as a bird observatory and one of the best locations in the UK for spotting families of cetaceans, particularly porpoises racing through the fast tidal waters of the headland.
6. The Strumble Head Lighthouse was built in 1908
7. The lighthouse stands on Ynys Meicl separated from the mainland by a very narrow channel. In stormy times the sea seems to boil and froth and is a spectacular view.
8. The lighthouse was converted from manual operation to electricity powered in 1965.
9. Strumble Head Lighthouse was converted to unmanned automatic operation in 1980.
10. The lighthouse is now remotely monitored and controlled from Harwich, Essex.

A few miles from Strumble Lighthouse is the scene for the last invasion of Britain. In 1797, 1,200 French soldiers landed at Carreg Wastad and subsequently surrendered in the Royal Oak pub in Fishguard. (read more...)
