Care and Clean Recommendations - Wool Blankets and Throws

How to Clean a Wool Blanket or Throw

Summary

Keep your wool blanket beautiful for years by following these care tips. For light dust, simply shake and air it. Spot clean small stains with mild wool detergent and cool water, blotting gently. For a full wash, hand washing or dry cleaning are recommended. Hand wash separately in cool water with a wool-specific detergent, avoiding wringing. Dry flat and away from direct heat or sunlight. Never tumble dry. Dry cleaning is the safest option, especially for a complete clean, as incorrect washing can damage the blanket.

Care Instructions - How to wash and clean a welsh wool blanket

Washing and Cleaning a Wool Blanket or Throw

A traditional Welsh blanket is a beautiful addition to any home, today and for many years to come. Here are our recommendations for washing and cleaning a wool blanket or throw.

A Good Shake!

If the blanket is just a bit dusty, we suggest that you give it a good shake, a good old-fashioned airing! This will often give your blanket a ‘freshen up’ without the need to cleaning.

Spot Cleaning

If only a part of the blanket needs a clean, then try Spot Cleaning. Soak and blot (or dab) the dirty area with a mild, wool detergent but avoid any scrubbing type movements. Leave the blanket to dry slowly and naturally in a flat position.

Your Blanket Needs A Complete Clean

If the whole blanket needs a clean, then there are two options, handwashing or dry cleaning.

Hand Washing

  • Use a delicate wool specific detergent with cool water, not hot water.
  • Each blanket should be washed separately without any fabric softener.
  • Gently wash the blanket but do not wring the blanket whilst washing.
  • Do not use a tumble dryer to dry the blanket. This to be avoided as the heat will definitely damage your blanket.
  • The blanket should be left to dry in a flat position to avoid any stretching of the wool and potentially distorting the shape of the blanket. Do not hang a blanket on a washing line.
  • Do not leave a blanket out of the sun for hours.

Machine Washing

  • Not particulary recmmended.
  • Wash on a gentle, cold cycle, with mild wool specific detergent.
  • Drying, as for hand washing.

Dry Cleaning

Washing a wool blanket incorrectly can without double damage your blanket. This is why we recommend drying cleaning as the safest way to wash a blanket, if the whole blanket needs a clean.

Conclusion

  • Freshen up your blanket with a good shake and a good airing.
  • Hand wash is prefereable to maching washing.
  • Drying cleaning is best if a complete clean is required.
