Newport Wales Beach - Pembrokeshire

Newport Pembrokeshire Beach - Newport Sands

The main beach at Newport is known in English as Newport Sands and in Welsh as Traeth Mawr (big beach) and yes, it is big. When the tide is out, it becomes an enormous beach! The beach is about one mile of flat sand backed by large sand dunes and looking out to Cardigan Bay and the Irish Sea. This flat beach provides a safe and popular place to swim with summer lifeguard cover.

Newport Sands is much-loved by locals and known as one of the best beaches in North Pembrokeshire and whilst busy in summer months can be almost deserted out of season. It is popular with dog walkers all year around although during tourist times, dogs are restricted to one part of the beach.

Access on Foot

The beach is situated at the estuary of the River Nevern in north Pembrokeshire. To access the beach on foot from the Parrog at Newport, you can take the short cut and wade across the river (at low tide) or take the longer walk over the river bridge alongside the river Nevern.

Access by Car

Newport beach is also accessible by car and is about two miles away by road. Ample parking is available at Newport Sands in the large car park situated below the golf course alongside the beach, with limited parking available on the beach itself. Public conveniences and a small beach shop and café are located close to the car park.

Bird and Wildlife Watchers

Wildlife lovers visiting Newport Sands can enjoy the many waders and wildfowl which frequent the Nevern estuary, as well as spotting the porpoises, bottle-nosed dolphins, and grey seals resident in Cardigan Bay. From Newport Sands, walkers can join the Pembrokeshire Coast Path which stretches north-east towards Poppit Sands and west towards Fishguard, providing magnificent coastal scenery as the trail climbs along the cliffs looking out across the Cardigan Bay.

Newport Golf Club

Newport Links Golf Club is at the north end of Newport beach. It is without doubt one of  the most picturesque golf clubs in Wales, with golfers playing among gorse-topped hillocks and little hollows and valleys.

Newport Town

Newport itself has a wide variety of shops, health food shops, cafes, pubs, and restaurants with extensive menus, including locally caught sewin, lobster and crab. The nearest larger towns are Fishguard to the west and Cardigan to the north, about seven to ten miles away

Newport Parrog

Whilst Newport Sands is the largest and most popular beach at Newport, there is one other, namely Newport Parrog. Newport stands near the mouth of the River Nevern, with the Parrog on the Southern side. It is nearest to the town and although it is sheltered the unpredictable currents around the river here make swimming dangerous.

The Parrog is an ideal place to watch the boats and yachts coming and going on the river estuary and but for refreshments, you can visit the Newport Boat Club for meals and drinks. There is limited parking at the Parrog but is walkable from Newport Town.

Pembrokeshire Coastal National Park

Newport the town and its beaches all lie within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. The Pembrokeshire Coastal Path can be joined from Newport and it is possible to see seals at almost any time of year. Dolphins and porpoises are often in the bay and in the summer months large groups or 'pods' can sometimes be seen in the waters close to shore. The cliffs around Newport abound with bird life, and attract birdwatchers during the summer months. There is a wheelchair accessible path from the Parrog car park which runs along the coast for 0.7km and access to the beach is easy with no steps or cliffs.
