Welsh Flag, Wales Flag and Welsh County Flags

The Welsh Flag, the Welsh Dragon or "Y Ddraig Goch" is recognisable by all Welshmen or women, worldwide. Many national flags are merely an arrangement of colours - the Welsh flag is one of a confident, fiery Welsh dragon – Y Ddraig Goch or the Welsh dragon flag!

Welsh Flag - Wales Flag, Official Welsh Flag

The Welsh Flag, the Welsh Dragon or Y Ddraig Goch wasn’t officially recognised as the national flag of the country until 1959. In 1958 the Gorsedd of Bards (comprising poets, writers and artists who have made a distinguished contribution to the Welsh language), expressed the wish that the red dragon flag be recognised as the national flag of Wales. And so, from 1959 onwards, the Welsh flag is as we know it today.

Welsh flag, Wales Flag wins the World Flag Tournament

The Welsh flag has consistently been judged as one of the most iconic and striking flags in the world. In 2021 in a worldwide poll, Y Ddraig Goch, or the Red Dragon flag, beat Scotland's white cross on blue background, by a margin of 1,401 votes. The two Celtic nations had fended off a 256 strong field, in the knock-out vote competition, to battle it out for the title. Wales also won the flag competition at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The Welsh flag beat Brazil with 93.5% of the votes cast.

    What is "Welsh for Dragon"?

In Welsh, the dragon translates as "Y Ddraig Goch". Literally this means "the red dragon" - this phrase is rarely used in English. It is either the Welsh Dragon or Y Ddraig Goch.

Welsh Dragon - Heraldic Symbol of Wales

The Welsh Dragon is the heraldic symbol of Wales and without doubt it is Wales' most recognisable symbol. The flag, a proud and ancient battle standard of the Welsh consists of a red dragon, passant (which in heraldry terms indicates that the animal has its right foot raised), on a green and white background. The Welsh Dragon traces its history as a national symbol all the way back to the 9th century.

Appreciate a Dragon Day 16th January

We in Wales, don't need a special day to appreciate the Dragon - we do this every day!! However, back in 2004, a lady named Donita K. Paul established this special Day as to appreciate the dragons.

Why is Welsh Flag not in the Union Jack?

The official answer is that it is! The Welsh flag colours, nor the dragon appears on the Union Flag because when the first Union Flag was created in 1606, the Principality of Wales by that time was already united with England and was no longer a separate principality. However, in 1959 Queen Elizabeth announced that ‘only the Red Dragon on a green and white flag should be flown on government buildings in Wales’. Sounds a bit like 'gobbledygook' but let's remember, the Welsh flag has just been voted the best flag in the world...
